Race and Ethnicity: A Special Three-Part Series
October 8, 2019 @ 9:00 am - October 22, 2019 @ 10:30 am PDTFree
Please join us for a 3-part conversation series on Race & Ethnicity on Tuesdays Oct. 8, Oct. 15, and Oct. 22 from Noon – 1:30 pm ET / 9:00 am – 10:30 am PT! (Adjust for your time zone.)
Check out this four-minute video from our first Race & Ethnicity Conversation Series to get a taste of this conversation!
In this series of three conversations, participants explore the complexities of the concepts of Race, Ethnicity, and their impacts on people from all walks of life.
We will cover new questions from the three Race & Ethnicity conversation guides found here. Some of these questions include:
- What qualifications do you use to determine a person’s race?
- Were conversations about race a part of your upbringing? If so, how was the subject approached? How did people around you talk about other races?
- Have you ever claimed an ethnicity that wasn’t yours or that wasn’t visibly yours in order to “pass,” or have privilege?
- How have race and ethnicity functioned differently in your life, if they have?
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I join the conversation?
When you register for the event by reserving a free or donation-based ticket, you will receive an order confirmation email. After that, you will receive two reminder emails the day before and an hour before each conversation with a link to join, link to the conversation guide, and other details on how to use our video call software, Zoom. You will need a device with a webcam to participate (preferably a computer or tablet rather than a cell phone).
Do I need any prior experience with these types of conversations to join?
No, this is an entry-level conversation where it is safe to explore what you think and feel about your own experiences with race and ethnicity.
Can I join just one conversation?
It is highly recommended that you join all three. This conversation series is best experienced as a 3-part conversation with the same cohort of people in each conversation. Ticket sales will close the day before the second conversation so you may miss the first conversation (Oct. 8) and still attend the second two (Oct. 15 & 22).
Do you guarantee diversity of participants in this conversation series?
This conversation, like all our video calls, is open to anyone to join. As such, we cannot guarantee the racial or ethnic diversity that some participants may want. We encourage you to invite others from whom you would want to learn to join this conversation and to consider hosting this series in your own community, where you will have the ability to recruit the diversity you seek. We also invite participants to appreciate the many different ways in which our participants have diversity in life experiences, backgrounds, and viewpoints – regardless of their race or ethnicity.
Will I be contacted about any other events, promotions, etc.?
Registrants may be emailed to request that they help recruit additional participants, and they may be contacted by their hosts between or after the conversations. Your contact information will remain private and you will not be contacted regarding anything outside of this conversation series without permission.
Who can I contact if I have any other questions or need to cancel?
Please contact Heather at firstname.lastname@example.org to either cancel or ask any other questions.
