Fiber Arts: Crafting Understanding

Humans create communities for so many reasons: safety, belonging, shared interests and values, and as an extension of identity. The fiber arts community reflects many of those ideals. Sharing creative ideas, designs, and skills can be energizing for crafters and artists of all ages and walks of life. The fiber arts community, much like society as a whole, has not been immune to political and racial tensions. Efforts to promote more equitable representation of all subgroups within the community have been challenging. At times, there have been feelings of being unwelcome on all sides. This conversation offers an opportunity to listen to each other and appreciate the shared interests that created this community. By recognizing and allowing our differences, we can find ways to remain connected and supportive of each other regardless of personal background.
This is a brand new guide! Here are the questions that this guide explores:
- What drew you to the crafting community? What crafts do you enjoy, and how did you first learn about them?
- How do you connect to other crafters? What benefits have you experienced from these connections?
- What differences have you noticed within the crafting community? How has it changed over the years? How have you embraced, or felt challenged, by those changes?
- What do belonging and exclusion look and feel like? How have you seen this within the crafting community?
- What are your hopes and concerns for the crafting community moving forward?

We are a low overhead, open-source, grassroots effort. Your donations help to make our online conversation offerings possible. A link to our donation page will be found on your registration confirmation page.
Is there a fee to participate?
No, however, our work is made possible through the donations of generous supporters – who might include you! You can give by clicking HERE or the donation button on the top right of this page.
What do I need to participate?
You will need a device with a webcam (preferably a computer or tablet rather than a cell phone) to participate and be seen by other participants. A Zoom link to join the conversation and a link to the conversation guide will be sent to you the day before and again one hour before the conversation.

Can I invite others to participate?
Yes! We suggest reaching out to those who think differently from you and telling them why you think they would like this conversation and why you are registered. You can send them to our events page on our website at: https://livingroomconversations.org/events/
What if I have questions or need to cancel?
If you have questions, you can contact Chelsea at firstname.lastname@example.org. Details about how to cancel online or via email will be in the confirmation email you will receive just after you register, or you can email Chelsea.
